It may sound like the buzzing of a swarm of insects, but it’s actually the whirring of the new Micro Quad-Copter. The Super-X Micro Quad-Copter is probably the first micro drone equipped with a DSM2 transmitter for fast and precise response. The mini-drone is rated for up to several meters in the air where it can stay in real-time contact with the user. The little quadcopter is based on high quality components and was assembled in the HobbyKing labs.
Placing all the components in several millimeters is not so easy, but the designers focused on the essential – less is more. Even more, the assembling process is without soldering and gluing. The frame is the key, while the electronic components are the fuel. For this project the weight is measured in grams, and to keep a lightweight frame was used durable full carbon material.
The platform is designed to be drop durable and has a modular design with plug and play micro connectors. Each brushless motor weight only 3 grams and has a rating of 6400kv. The 75mm props are fully equipped with mounting hardware and can be replaced in minutes. All the sensors including accelerometer and gyro, digital compass, and barometric pressure are controlled by the Atmega328p microcontroller.
The 300mah battery is small enough to supply with power the quadcopter for 8 minutes of flight. The flying time can be extended from 8 to 12 minutes by replacing the 300mah battery with a 600mah battery. Its features make it a great micro drone backpack accessory for capturing video images or for 3D use.
The kit doesn’t include components such as battery charger and the DMS2 transmitter. Even so, the price of the Mini Quad-copter is around $150.
